Newcastle technology company Saphi has taken out two major honours at the NSW Business Awards. The Mayfield firm was recognised for Excellence in Small Business and Excellence in Innovation, cementing its reputation as one of the state’s most forward-thinking enterprises.
Saphi develops cutting-edge digital and technical solutions to boost business efficiency and safety. Its flagship product, Shellshock AI, is transforming industrial risk management by using artificial intelligence to detect hazards in high-risk environments such as mines, manufacturing plants, and remote roads. By turning ordinary cameras into intelligent safety systems, Shellshock AI reduces reliance on human decision-making, helping operators stay safe while maximising productivity.
The technology’s impact has been profound. International uptake of Shellshock AI has driven Saphi’s production output up by an astonishing 1,700 per cent in just six months, marking a period of rapid growth for the Hunter innovator.
Saphi’s Chief Commercial Officer, Liam Manning, said the team was thrilled with the recognition:
“Our focus is simple: give camera networks a brain so sites can prevent harm and improve productivity in the same move. Safety shouldn’t be complicated or expensive – it should work in the background and pay for itself.”
He added that the awards provided an opportunity to reflect on the company’s journey:
“We didn’t set out expecting this level of impact and response from the market, but we are hungrier than ever to keep raising the bar.”
Hunter businesses were well represented at the event, with finalists in most of the 21 categories. Business Hunter CEO Bob Hawes praised Saphi’s achievement:
“It’s no surprise given the repeated success Saphi has had across a range of categories in the Business Hunter Awards. They are an agile, forward-thinking business that keeps adapting and innovating to respond to changing markets. They demonstrate all the smarts and attributes the Hunter needs in its emerging, future-focused businesses.”
